Some of us have experienced being around a person who used to be very active and suddenly lost interest in things that they used to enjoy. That is one of the symptoms of depression. Depression isn’t just about feeling down, nor is it about what goes on in our heads, but what happens in our bodies, too.
In a survey conducted in 17 countries by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2012, it is said that that 1 in 20 people reported having gone through depression in the previous years.
There are cases where the person suffering from depression doesn’t know what triggered it. This can be dangerous since it can lead to unintentional and uncontrollable behaviors.
Studies from the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California have shown that the most age group with the most cases is teenagers to young adults and the senior citizens. From a psychiatric investigation by Hur Ji-Won, Bun-Hee Lee Titled “Gender Differences in Suicidal Behavior in Korea”, South Korea is known to have the largest number of suicide cases that are mostly caused by over-stressing. Workers tend to work for long hours under pressure to meet expectations of their employers.
The Same case is experienced by students whose parents have high expectations; they tend to push themselves to limits that cause a lot of stress. It is worse when students are forced to take courses that they do not like and enjoy, but have to take because of their parents.
The majority assumes that the depressed to the suicidal. That’s not always the case. You can feel down and hate yourself, but not want to take your own life. You can still strive to be better and to be healthier, just not know which direction to turn in. You may even be scared to take your own life, or worry how those that depend on you would cope without you. That makes you hate yourself more, doubt yourself more, and feel like even more of a failure. Most of the times depressed people feel like they should not exist in the society, something that always leads them to hide their situation.
The best way to treat depression is through therapy, not necessarily talking to a psychologist or psychiatrist. A conversation with someone can be the best treatment ever. Depression should not just be a mental issue, but also a health problem.
