Professor Elizabeth Susan Vista-Suarez of the Silliman University College of Performing and Visual Arts (COPVA) was awarded the Gawad Nicanor Abelardo for Outstanding Music Educators of the Philippines.
Dr. Suarez received the award at ceremonies held at the University of the Philippines Dilliman last September 15.
Gawad Nicanor Abelardo for Outstanding Music Educators of the Philippines is awarded annually by the University of the Philippine College of Music. The basic criteria are that the nominee must have earned a doctorate degree, served for at least 15 years as music educator, and published books and journal articles.
Dr. Suarez is a full professor at COPVA and served as its dean for many years.
Suarez has been serving in the University for 33 years now. She has written six progressive work text materials on music for elementary schools and books on other subjects.
Aside from being a teacher in piano and choir performances, Suarez is also the director of the Silliman University Gratitude and Goodwill Ambassadors and of the University’s Covenant Choir. She sits as the chairman of the advisory board of the SU Culture and Arts Council.
Upon receiving the award, Suarez said God knows everything and He works in His “mysterious ways.”
“God can see, and he will reward you. I feel humbled. Is this really happening to me? It’s not something I ran after, it’s just there. If the work that you do is sincere and pure, then you will get your reward,” she said.
Jem Talaroc, a former student of Suarez in COPVA, nominated her for the award. Talaroc is now studying in a graduate program at UP-Dilliman.
